Zdislava Pokorná

Few journalists in today’s Czech Republic set the public agenda as powerfully as she does. The findings of the 28-year-old investigative reporter for Deník N have, in recent months alone, contributed to the so-called bitcoin scandal and the subsequent resignation of minister Pavel Blažek, as well as the ongoing controversies surrounding government affiliate Filip Turek.

Earlier in her career, she helped uncover pro-Russian disinformation networks in the Czech Republic and investigated how people close to former president Miloš Zeman built business interests around his time in office. She later captured these findings in her book Zemanovo finále.

She is the recipient of the Novinářská křepelka award, which recognises outstanding journalistic achievements by reporters under the age of 33. Despite starting in journalism nearly a decade ago without great self-confidence or ambitions to make a name for herself, she gradually developed the drive that has made her one of the country’s most prominent investigative journalists.

She says her ambitions grew largely out of the “existential crises of adolescence” and a feeling that ordinary people, often underestimated by others, can change the world. Despite the visibility of her work and the recognition she has earned, she remains remarkably humble.
