His passion lies in studying forest vegetation, its ecosystems, and their importance to human society, both historically and today. Much of his work takes place in the field, where he collects botanical and ecological data, believing that direct empirical experience is the foundation of sound scientific conclusions. His research has taken him to places as diverse as North America and the tropical rainforests of Borneo.
