Under his leadership, the university has strengthened its position within both the Czech and European higher education landscape. The university has successfully continued its membership in international university alliances such as NEOLAiA. Through this step, the University of Ostrava has become part of a group of European universities working together to advance education and foster close international cooperation among students, researchers and academics.
He currently oversees the implementation of several major strategic transformation projects. One of them is LERCO (Life Environment Research Center Ostrava), funded by the Just Transition Operational Programme, which aims to build modern scientific and research infrastructure while contributing to the transformation of the Moravian-Silesian Region, with a focus on biomedicine, healthy lifestyles and social innovation.
Another key initiative is REFRESH (Research Excellence For REgion Sustainability and High-tech Industries), a project with a budget exceeding CZK 2.6 billion, focused on creating a new innovation ecosystem and supporting the transformation of the Moravian-Silesian Region.
Professionally, Petr Kopecký has long focused on American literature, ecocriticism and environmental humanities. His academic work is closely connected with the Department of English and American Studies at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Ostrava, where he explores the relationship between literature, culture and the environment. He is also actively engaged in combating disinformation and promoting education.
