Mourning [A] BLKstar

Mourning [A] BLKstar

Mourning [A] BLKstar, a genre-defying, multi-generational collective born out of the vibrant tapestry of Afro-American culture, brings shared stories and songs that explore the unfolding American apocalypse. Their music blends live instrumentation with hip-hop production, interwoven with echoes of gospel, funk, and soul.

This spectacular afro-futurist collective, founded in Cleveland, continues its mission that began a decade ago, and after performing at major festivals worldwide, they are set to debut in the Czech Republic with a brand-new album.

“The collective idea was a gesture of solidarity and a different relationship with the community, focusing on what benefits the whole. We prioritize ‘we’ over ‘I’ or ‘you’ – we believe collective work is the only way forward,” say Mourning [A] BLKstar, staying true to these principles throughout their existence. Their approach challenges traditional entertainment industry norms, and they have collaborated with remarkable artists like Algiers and Lonnie Holley, consistently releasing new music almost every year. Following last year’s Ancient//Future, the band will unveil their latest album, Flowers for the Living, this May. Mourning [A] BLKstar continues to push boundaries, unwavering in their belief in their integrity and the unrelenting power of their production. In a recent interview with Full Moon, they shared: “Music is the perfect guide for dealing with life in general. We try to create without regard for how difficult the conversation is or how dark the topics we present to our listeners are. When we view life through this lens, it doesn’t matter how dark the moment is—there is always beauty. You just have to find it and listen.”
