Karel Janko

Evolutionary biologist at the Czech Academy of Sciences.

His research focuses on asexual reproduction, a phenomenon that is far more widespread in nature than one might expect. He studies it across a variety of organisms, including loaches, small freshwater fish inhabiting streams in the Kokořín region of the Czech Republic. What do evolution and markets have in common? Why has sexual reproduction become the dominant reproductive strategy in most organisms? And how is it possible for some species to carry three sets of chromosomes instead of the usual two?

These are some of the questions explored by Karel Janko, who is also passionate about Antarctica and the Nordic regions, where he studies glaciers and their ecosystems.
