Jan Pačes

Molecular geneticist at the Czech Academy of Sciences who studies the structure of genomes.

He is fascinated by the ways genetic information can spread. His research focuses on retroviral elements, remnants of ancient viral infections that became embedded in human DNA millions of years ago and still make up around 8% of the human genome. Over the course of evolution, they lost the ability to produce infectious viruses but became a permanent and inseparable part of our genetic makeup. Jan Pačes has compiled the most comprehensive database of these elements to date.

A lifelong Scout enthusiast and passionate cook.
