Humazapas is a young traditional group from the Ecuadorian Andes, made up of musicians and dancers from the Turuku community in Imbabura province. Since 2010, they have been dedicated to preserving and revitalising the original Kichwa dances and rhythms passed down to them by their grandparents – known as Taytas and Mamas – which still resonate during ritual festivals, weddings, funerals, and harvest celebrations.

hey play the harp, reed flutes, panpipes, violin and guitars. Their dances include Fandango, Chimbapuru, and the Inti Raymi festival celebrations. But this is more than folklore — it’s a way of life. Humazapas’ music is deeply rooted in mythology, nature, and the collective memory of mountain villages.

Beyond the concert stage, they act as cultural activists: running the Waruntzy school where children learn to build instruments, play music, and dance; organising the Turu Uku festival; and supporting young flautists through the Ura Urku project.

Their debut album, Sara Mama (2023), is a bold fusion of traditional Kichwa music and modern arrangements — a powerful statement that indigenous culture is not a thing of the past, but a vibrant voice of the present.
