GAIA BANFI

Steel stage

Italian pop that isn’t afraid to go its own way

An Italian singer, producer and multi-instrumentalist who does things her own way. Her music brings together pop, electronics and a singer-songwriter approach without sticking to one lane. This isn’t just “a girl with a guitar”, but an artist with a strong musical background – a trained jazz vocalist who treats her voice as an instrument and isn’t afraid to move beyond classic song structures. You can hear inspirations like Bon Iver or Radiohead, but it never feels like a copy.

Gaia Banfi was born in Milan and is now based in Bologna, but a key role in her work is played by Genoa, the city of her childhood. That’s where her album La Maccaia is set, its title referring to a specific meteorological phenomenon – a fog that forms over the sea. The record draws on memories, relationships and emotions that return in waves. It’s not mainstream pop, but it’s not an isolated experiment either. At Colours, she will present La Maccaia live.
