Brussels and Energy: Do We Even Know Where We’re Headed?

GLOBAL

Europe is pushing its energy transition at full speed – but is it moving in the right direction? The EU has set so many targets that energy companies, industry leaders, and the public are struggling to keep track. Industry is dealing with high energy prices and the fight to remain competitive, the energy sector is grappling with investments and permitting processes, while NGOs are calling for even faster progress.

Where is the line between necessary decarbonisation and excessive European ambition? Are we accelerating faster than we can realistically afford at a time when the rest of the world is moving at a different pace? And does today’s energy policy actually follow a clear plan – or are the number of targets simply growing without matching reality?

The discussion will explore questions such as:

  • Do European policies have a clear direction, or are they overloaded with too many goals?
  • How can ambition be aligned with technological, investment, and societal realities?
  • Is Europe moving too fast compared to the rest of the world – or not fast enough?
  • And what is needed to make the transition feasible, sustainable, and economically meaningful?

The aim of the panel is to offer a comprehensive and fact-based perspective on how the energy sector, industry, and the public perceive Europe’s direction – and what will determine whether the European vision becomes reality.
