Last summer, she was struggling with writer’s block. Just a few months later, her solo debut Kvety won two Radio_Head Awards. Her first solo concert came only after the album’s release, but the fairytale rising from the depths of the Slovak underground is far from over. Once celebrated primarily as an instrumentalist, she has become one of the most exciting new names on the Slovak music scene.
“I’ve set a personal record for the number of songs I’ve written. I wrote the first one at the end of August and the last at the end of December. In total, ten songs came together in just four months,” Meowlau, also known as Laura Jašková, told Full Moon. She has been active on the music scene for over a decade. With a background in jazz and classical music, she has collaborated with numerous artists, toured extensively across the Czech Republic and Slovakia with singer Val, and repeatedly performed as a member of Billy Barman. She only began writing and performing her own songs while creating Kvety. Built on melodic post-punk, the album is an intimate and deeply personal statement that captivated listeners with its honesty, vivid emotional storytelling and memorable choruses. Following its double triumph at the Slovak music awards, Meowlau was invited to appear on Katarzia’s latest album, and her momentum continues to grow. Yet Kvety still feels wonderfully fresh.
