Music is an essential component of most films and TV series, and this is also true for the Netflix hit that took the streaming charts by storm in the fall of 2021. The minimalist jingle, reminiscent of a children’s nursery rhyme, and the musical score blending Western influences with traditional Asian sounds quickly gained fans, bringing its composer, Jung Jaeil, into the global spotlight. However, recognition had already come two years earlier for his work on the Oscar-winning film Parasite. Over the past decade, Jaeil has become the go-to composer for director Bong Joon Ho, collaborating with him on the sci-fi film Okja and returning to the genre in the current blockbuster Mickey 17.
Jung Jaeil’s journey as a film music composer began in the late 1990s. A few years later, he ventured into solo work, drawing on his time at a jazz academy. His music draws inspiration from classical music, jazz, and instrumental rock. He utilizes his knowledge of several instruments, which he has played since childhood. Audiences will experience his talents firsthand at Colours of Ostrava, where he will perform alongside the Janáček Philharmonic Ostrava. The premiere experience will be enhanced by visuals and projections from the renowned Fluks Studio, known for elevating select Boiler Room sessions, creating the remix album visuals for Lady Gaga, and producing projections for Olivia Rodrigo’s GUTS tour. The program will feature selections from the aforementioned films, as well as Jung Jaeil’s solo works.
