Lama Gyurme & Jean-Philippe Rykiel

Vítkovice Gong stage

Gyurme’s blissfully growling vocals promote spiritual cleansing, a tendency towards universal love and generosity – at the same time calling us to free ourselves from the chains of superficiality.

Here prayer song finds itself in perfect harmony with Tibetan percussion, gongs, etherealsynthesisers and piano. In light of the music they are immersed by, one wouldn’t expect such an enthusiastic appreciation for the pair’s musical mission by the material world – however with a platinum album under their belt and support from various big names including Peter Gabriel under whose Real World label their highly acclaimed Rain of Blessings: Vajra Chants was released, that assumption was clearly misplaced. Lama Gyurme – the Oumze or Master of Music – was born in Bhutan and educated in the teachings of monastic Buddhists including art and music. He currently resides in France and has been working with the French keyboard player Jean-Philippe Rykiel for many years. He was born blind and so approaches music with a far more sensitive and insatiable curiosity which explains why he was such hot property for African stars Salifa Keitu and Youssa N´Doura, the trumpeter John Hassell, Peter Gabriel and Leonard Cohen.
