His research focuses on retroviral elements, remnants of ancient viral infections that became embedded in human DNA millions of years ago and still make up around 8% of the human genome. Over the course of evolution, they lost the ability to produce infectious viruses but became a permanent and inseparable part of our genetic makeup.
