Ivy Z

Czech Republic

"With his guitar, bold shadows and minimalist outfit on stage, he is reminiscent of PJ Harvey from the second half of the nineties. In more subtle positions, he soon switches into a mode in which he looks like a character from Sofia Coppola's cult film The Virgin Suicides. That is, fragile but also nihilistic together," says Aneta Martínková from Radio Wave about Ivy Z. The musician known from dreampop Billow or indie-folk Strangers in the City made her solo debut two years ago with Under a Red Moon pt. 1 & pt. 2, released by Slovak label Z Tapes, thanks to which she also played in Japan.

Last year's album Let Yours Be the Last Burning Heart was released on Ostrava's Korobushka Records, with whom she shares a sympathetic DIY approach. "From the opening track, Broken Ocean, it's clear that Ivy Z is using the same devices she's used on her previous collection. The piano, on which she composed most of the songs, is occasionally partnered by guitar, while Ableton sets the rhythm. Her haunting voice hovers above it all. Only here, she no longer treads in her house slippers, she doesn't try where the song will take her, but walks with complete sovereignty into dreamscapes, despite the fact that the shadows are darker and the starless sky more oppressive." Full Moon magazine gave the recording an eighty-five percent. And he's sure that Ivy Z, this time with a band, will be extremely impressive live. Not to mention the appearance of Katerina Elznicová (Manon meurt) on drums, Meg Jander from Bibione or guitarist Linda Wojnar (buns/nouze, Gin&Platonic).
